Routine may sound like a static thing, a noun, something you possess. I have a routine, and therefore I am productive. Routine is an incredibly powerful tool, but only if you are are always reevaluating its use.

I have spent a lot of time reading and thinking about how to organize my time, build a healthy writing habit, and lead a more creative, productive, and happy life. From all the books, podcasts, blog posts, and hours of self reflection, I know one thing for sure:

Productivity is not a static state — it is a constant process of reevaluation. Experiment with your workflow often.

Accomplishing the things we seek to accomplish, whatever they may be, takes consistent, intentional effort. I am relearning again and again that it is okay to let go of old habits and start new ones. It is also okay to try to establish new habits again and again. Productivity is a constant work in progress.

Two months ago I started a new job that has an open-ended unstructured schedule. I love the freedom of an open schedule and see it as an experimental productivity playground. Most weeks, I may only have one or two meetings…
